Work Philosophy Essay
Journalism is more than a profession; it is a calling that uses storytelling to uncover truth, highlight unheard voices and drive meaningful change, making it a powerful calling socially and personally.

Meaningful work is not just about earning a paycheck or contributing to retirement; it’s about using one’s talents to inform, create impact and inspire. A "calling" is work that contributes to the greater good and provides a deep sense of fulfillment. For me, meaningful work is rooted in journalism and storytelling—the ability to uncover truth, give voice to the voiceless and create informed communities. Journalism is more than a profession; it is a pillar to democracy. My approach to work is guided by the belief that storytelling has the power to challenge perspectives, drive change, and create understanding regardless of personal differences.

Approaching journalism means embodying a deep sense of curiosity, integrity and a commitment to truth. A journalist’s role is to document the world honestly, providing people with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. I have experienced this firsthand in my journalism experiences, whether through writing investigative pieces, interviews, or crafting narratives that shed light on critical issues. The feeling of knowing that my words or images can influence public opinion or inspire change fuels my passion for storytelling.

Meaningful journalism to me is a dance between curiosity and information seeking that toes a line. I heard a quote once by investigative journalist, Mariana Van Zeller, “there is a line that is not to be crossed in journalism, but you better come back with chalk on your shoes.” These are the stories I seek to tell. Around the world, millions of lives are being impacted negatively by microcosms of realities that are unknown to the general population.

Beyond its social impact, storytelling also holds personal meaning. As an emerging journalist, I am constantly learning about people, cultures, history and the forever evolving world around us. Every story is an opportunity to grow, to connect and to understand. This continuous learning process is what makes journalism purposeful.

Ultimately, my work philosophy is driven by the belief that journalism is a force for truth, justice, and understanding. I see my career not just as a means of employment, but as a mission to inform and educate. By approaching journalism as a calling, I strive to create meaningful work that not only tells stories but also makes a difference. Moving forward, I will continue to seek opportunities that allow me to use storytelling as a tool for positive change, ensuring that my work remains purposeful, ethical, and impactful.
