Austin, TX - 20,000 people flood the streets of downtown Austin for 2023 marathon.

With 13,695 total participants, runners from all over came to run in the 2023 Ascension Seton Austin Marathon for its 31st year. The event offers a full marathon, half marathon and 5k. The race participant categories are broken down by gender and age. For some runners, the goal was to complete the race. For others, it's to win. The overall winner was George Onyancha from Kenya with a time of 2:16:35. The prize money was a $20,000 purse.

Dan Carroll, event organizer and owner of High Five Events, explains that Austin is one of the most sought out city marathon destinations.

“Austin sells itself,” Carrol said. “People not only come here for a getaway vacation but they also get to enjoy the large fitness minded community. And there’s no better way to celebrate than with some good food and live music.”

Beginning early in the morning, thousands of people line the blocked off streets cheering with handmade signs and cowbells. Jesse Urquiaga, a spectator from Houston, Texas, says he is here to support a friend.

“My friend has ran several marathons and this is his all-time favorite,” Urquiaga said. “He likes the challenge of the hills unlike other marathons he’s ran.”

For some runners, training and preparation for the race started months ago. Katie Kurp, Austin local and marathon finisher, explained training for her first time running the Austin Marathon and how she felt completing the race.

“I started training back in October,” Kurp said. “This course was really hard. I feel relieved and happy. And very tired.”
